Thug Coding® has a YouTube channel.
Bringing tech to the hood is very important as a concept.
Forget What You Heard: "T.H.U.G." is the New Tech Hustle, and It's Lifting Everybody Up.
Yo, let's talk about a word: T.H.U.G. For too long, it's been twisted, loaded with negativity. But what if I told you there's a movement flipping that script, injecting it with pure, unadulterated positive power? Get ready for T.H.U.G. Coding – Technology Helps Underserved Generations. And trust me, this ain't just a catchy acronym; it's a game-changer.
Spearheaded by visionaries like Mr. Fun (Michael Wall), T.H.U.G. Coding is about bringing the future straight to the heart of our communities. We're talking about turning our neighborhoods, our "hoods," into the new (and yeah, functional) Silicon Valleys. This isn't a pipe dream; it's a plan.
HOLD UP!!!
The NAME is actually THUG CODING®,,,
The FIRST time I pitched this idea of bringing TECH to the hood, in public, was at a community meeting in West Athens.
The people in the meeting were mostly older. Homeowners. Baptist, Christian Boujee...probably.
I say that because that is predominately the makeup of these types of community groups. So...the FIRST time they heard me say THUG coding...nothing really had emphasis, or STUCK in their minds beside...THUG.
They DID NOT like that name. That word. They had grandchildren who were considered that. The areas was FILLED with Black boys who were known to be that. That didn't LIKE that. I understood. But, my goal and concept was MUCH larger than what they "thought" the term to mean.
I had to be quick on my feet! It seemed that every Black organization HAD to have a acronym. In MY case...the word THUG would NEVER be accepted unless I wrapped it in that camouflage.
Technology Helps Us Grow is what I blerted out. The council of elsers seemed ready to accept that...so...we begin.
Why Tech? Why Now? Why Here?
Look, the tech industry is a beast – a $5 TRILLION global market, with the U.S. holding the biggest slice. We're talking $1.9 trillion in U.S. value-added GDP and over 12 million jobs. That's serious economic power. For too long, access to these opportunities has felt like it's for "other people," in "other places." T.H.U.G. Coding says: Nah. This is for us, too.
Bringing tech education – real-deal skills in coding, computer science, software engineering (think HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python) – directly into the community does a few massive things:
- Creates Real Alternatives: Got a little brother, nephew, or even yourself, looking for a path? This is it. Instead of the streets, imagine building apps, designing websites, or engineering software that changes the world. We're talking skills that lead to SIX-FIGURE incomes, fam.
- Builds Skills for the Future: This isn't just about jobs today; it's about owning tomorrow. Tech skills are the new literacy. They open doors to participate in the global economy on our own terms.
- Fosters Ownership & Local Business: This is crucial. It’s not just about getting a job; it's about creating jobs. It's about building businesses in the community, by the community, for the community. When we own the tech, we control our narrative and our economic destiny. Spreading the word about these tech-in-the-hood ideas? That itself can generate income!
Making Tech Cool & Accessible
Let's be real, sometimes "tech" can sound intimidating or, dare I say, a little... dry. T.H.U.G. Coding is about smashing that perception. It's about:
- Community Connection: Working with local hubs like Los Angeles Southwest College, high schools, middle schools, and even public libraries to make tech education readily available.
- Changing the Image: Showing that tech is diverse, inclusive, and, yes, cool. It’s about creativity, problem-solving, and building dope stuff.
- Highlighting the Lucrative Side: Let's not shy away from it – tech pays. Showing the community how these skills translate into real financial stability and generational wealth is a powerful motivator.
Why This Benefits EVERYONE
This isn't just a "hood thing" – this is an everyone thing. When you empower underserved communities with tech skills and the means to create and own:
- Untapped Talent is Unleashed: Some of the most brilliant minds and innovative ideas are waiting to be discovered. Bringing diverse perspectives to tech leads to better solutions for all.
- Economic Growth for All: Thriving local economies contribute to a stronger city and nation. New businesses, more jobs, and increased spending power ripple outwards.
- Innovation from New Angles: The challenges and experiences of our communities can inspire unique tech solutions that the mainstream might overlook. Imagine apps and platforms built from the ground up to solve local problems, which then find global relevance.
- Stronger, Safer Communities: When people have viable, exciting pathways to success and ownership, it transforms the fabric of a neighborhood.
T.H.U.G. Coding is more than a program; it's a paradigm shift. It’s about reclaiming, redefining, and rebuilding. It's about recognizing the power within our communities and giving it the tools to shine. This is how we build a future where technology truly helps all generations, creating a wave of innovation and opportunity that lifts everyone.
So, next time you hear "T.H.U.G.," think about the future. Think about empowerment. Think about tech. And get ready to see the change.
